Durga Puja in Sikkim – A Significant Religious Festival by Pushpitha Wijesinghe

One of the leading festivals in Sikkim, Durga Puja is a celebration of the victory of good over evil. People gather at temples for special worship sessions and to offer prayers to goddess Durga. In the evening, music and dance performances are held.
Located bordering Bhutan, Nepal and China, Sikkim in India is popular for its snow capped mountains and landscapes of lush greenery. Lying in the Himalayan foot hills, it is blessed with various attractions of natural beauty that travellers can marvel at. Among the range of Sikkim’s attractions are Tsongmo Lake, Kabi Lungstok, Rumtek Monastery, Baba Mandir, Gurudongmar Lake and Dzongri trek. Owing to its location which is an ecological hotspot, the forested areas of the state flaunt a diverse array flora and fauna and due to its altitudinal gradation, it exhibits a variety of plants ranging from tundra and alpine ones to temperate and tropical species.
A festival of great significance for Sikkemese people is Durga Puja which is celebrated by Nepali’s, Hindu’s, Lepcha’s and Bhutia’s alike. During this festival which marks the victory of good over evil, worship sessions are held in Pandals. Among the type of sessions held in various temples throughout the region, the one at Thakurbari temple is relatively famous.
The ritual of making pandals for the festival is said to have been taking place in Sikkim since 1947. Thousands of devotees from across the state visit the temple for this religious session. During the festival all the educational institutions, government offices and law courts are closed. Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim gives pride of place to this festival and celebrates it between eight to ten days offering prayers to goddess Durga, holding feasts and rejoicing with dancing and music.
Some symbolic processions called Shova Yatras are held and people dressed in new clothes visit different localities to worship goddesses such as Durga, Lakshmi, Saraswati, Kartikeya and Ganesha whose statues are kept at beautifully decorated pandals. Mantras from religious scriptures known as Durga Saptshati are recited by priests. In towns and villages dramas, dance and music performances are held in addition to various sports events and cultural competitions.
